Dangerous Vioxx Side Effects

Vioxx was a brand of rofecoxib, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug prescribed to patients who suffer from osteoarthritis and acute pain conditions that went into production in May 1999. In September 2004, Merck & Co., the manufacturer of Vioxx, voluntarily recalled the drug. Merck was conducting a study determine if colon polyps could be prevented from the use of Vioxx when researchers discovered a strong correlation between heart attacks/strokes and Vioxx. They found that people who used Vioxx for 18 months or longer had a substantially higher risk for these side effects.

The drug was recalled immediately, but it was too late for many; the U.S. Food and Drug Administration estimates that from 1999 to 2004, between 88,000 and 139,000 heart attacks may have been caused by Vioxx. The FDA analysts estimate that 30% to 40% of these heart attacks were fatal. Heart attacks were not the only possible side effects of Vioxx. There were other dangerous or deadly side effects identified by the research into the drug.

Side effects also include:

  • Stroke
  • Cardiovascular complications
  • Blood clots
  • Death
